Badminton & Beyond: From Evolution to Popularity In India

Badminton by Acres Club

Badminton, a popular racquet sport, has a rich history that dates back to ancient civilizations in India, China, and Greece. During ancient times, various forms of this game were played for leisure and exercise. It is said that the modern form of Badminton was invented in British India by British military officers around 1850. A fun fact about Badminton is that earlier it was called ‘Poona’ because it was very popular in the garrison town of Poona. After the retirement of British army officers, this sport was brought back to England. It became so popular there that the Duke of Beaufort introduced it in the ‘Badminton House’, his country estate, and since then the game has gotten its name ‘Badminton’.

The first-ever badminton competition, the “All England Open Badminton Championships,” was started in 1899 by the ‘Badminton Association of England’. By the year 1934, the ‘Badminton World Federation’ was established. In India, the ‘Badminton Association of India’ was established in the same year. In 1992, the game paved its way into the Olympics and became an official Olympic sport.

Badminton is very popular all over the world because it is very easy to play, you just need two racquets, a shuttlecock, and an opponent to play with. Badminton is played by two or four members, either as singles or doubles. Racquets are used by players to hit the shuttlecock over a net. Here the objective is to score points by making the shuttlecock land on the opponent’s side of the court and preventing them from returning it successfully. The game continues until one side scores the required number of points to win the match.

Importance of a good coach to excel in Badminton

Good coaching plays a vital role in excelling in any game. Apart from speed, agility, and coordination badminton requires strategy, so a skilled coach plays a very important and irreplaceable role here. A skilled coach can provide personalized guidance on techniques, footwork, strokes, and strategies keeping in mind the player’s strengths and weaknesses.

A coach can teach players tactical knowledge about shots, positions, and strategies. A good coach designs training programs to improve the physical fitness, strength, endurance, and flexibility of players. Coaches provide immediate feedback on performance. Coaches have a deep understanding of the sport’s technical parts. They can identify flaws in players, recognize their strengths, and provide training according to that. A coach is essential for maintaining enthusiasm and keeping players motivated.

In short, a skilled and knowledgeable coach serves as a mentor, strategist, motivator, and technical guide. With the right badminton coaching, players can be aware of their full potential and achieve excellence in the sport.
