With its graceful rallies and super exciting matches, Lawn Tennis has gained a place among the most popular sports in the world. With its rich history, competitiveness, and popularity, this racquet sport has captivated audiences for generations. In this blog, we will explore the world of Lawn Tennis and embark on a journey to know more about this game.

People all around the world love playing Tennis. They play it for fun with friends and family, and some choose to become professional Tennis players. The reason behind the popularity of the lawn tennis game is its inclusive nature. Whether it be a toddler, an adult, or an elderly person, anyone can play and enjoy the game.

This popular sport has its roots in 19th-century England. The modern form of Lawn Tennis was developed by Major Walter Wingfield. Earlier it was played on grass courts and the English elites used to play it as a pastime on well-maintained lawns of grand estates. Hence it was known as ‘Lawn Tennis’. As time passed the game evolved and became more structured with standardised rules and equipment. Today The game has become a global sensation, with major tournaments like Wimbledon, the US Open, the French Open, and the Australian Open drawing all the best players from every corner of the world.

Equipment

  • Racquet-

Lawn Tennis racquet is your most important tool on the court. There are so many racquets available in various styles, shapes, and sizes. You should use the one that suits your playing style. Beginners often start with lightweight, oversized racquets. Advanced players may prefer more control-oriented racquet options. Make sure that when you hold your racquet it feels comfortable in your hand and suits your skill level.

  • Ball-

Lawn Tennis balls are the heart of the game. There are various types of tennis balls available in the market but for most games, the standard yellow balls are used.

  • Net-

Net is like a divider in the middle of the court. Players hit the ball over the net to the other side and this adds to the fun in the game.

  • Wrist bands-

It is essential to wear wristbands while playing lawn tennis as it absorbs sweat and helps players keep their hands dry for a better grip.

  • Headbands-

Headbands add a very cool and stylish look to tennis players, but the actual work of these headbands is to absorb the sweat from the hair and prevent it from running into the player’s eyes. It ensures clear vision and focus on the game.

  • Shoes-

To ensure necessary grip and stability on the court, lawn tennis shoes are specially designed with features like best-quality soles and good support. These shoes help players to move swiftly and reduce the risk of injuries.

  • Dress

Lawn tennis outfits come in various designs including skirts and dresses for women and shorts and shirts for men. These outfits are moisture-absorbent and help players to stay cool and dry during matches.

Lawn Tennis Court-

Lawn Tennis courts come with various types of surfaces. Some are made of hard materials like asphalt and are fast. Some have a special kind of dirt called clay and are slow to play and some are covered in grass. The surfaces covered in grass are even faster. The type of surface affects the way of playing the game. The court has a rectangular shape with a length of 78 ft and a width of about 27ft. For doubles, the size is a bit wider. All players need to know about the surface and size of the court to make a perfect strategy to play and win the match.

Important Shots in Lawn Tennis-

There are different types of actions or movements in Lawn Tennis that players perform during the match. These actions include the ‘serve’, the start of each round. Players use ‘forehand’ and ‘backhand’ shots to hit the ball to their opponent. There are other actions like ‘volleys’ where players hit the ball in the air and ‘smash’ to hit the ball high over the opponent’s head. The ‘drop shot’ is a soft shot. Good footwork and quick moves help players cover the court. These actions and techniques are all part of what makes tennis an exciting and challenging sport. In our next blog, we will dive deeper into the world of lawn tennis and explore all the important shots played in Lawn Tennis in detail. So don’t miss it!

Common Errors While Playing Table Tennis and Tips to Avoid Them

Table Tennis, often known as the fastest game in the world, can be both exciting and challenging. Whether you are learning Table Tennis professionally or just playing with friends, it’s common to make errors while playing. These errors can be a valuable part of the learning process if you recognize them and start working on them. It is not just about winning matches but also about elevating your skills and becoming a better player. By recognizing and addressing these errors, you can have more fun, enjoy successful rallies, and perform well in your matches. In this blog, we will explore some common errors players often make in the game and further, we will discuss how to fix them.

Holding the paddle in an incorrect manner-

One of the most common mistakes players make while playing Table Tennis is holding the paddle incorrectly. How you hold the paddle affects your control, power, and accuracy when hitting the ball. The first thing that players should keep in mind is to hold the paddle appropriately. The correct grip allows for better control and flexibility while playing. It makes you able to generate spin and power more effectively. There are two common grips – The Shakehand Grip and The Penhold Grip. Practice these grips until it feels natural. Remember fixing this mistake is like setting a strong foundation for your game.

Footwork and Positioning-

Another common mistake players make in Table Tennis is not having proper footwork and positioning during play. Many players don’t move well or stand in the right place, which makes it challenging to reach the ball and respond effectively. This mistake can lead to missed shots and difficulties in controlling the game. To fix this mistake, focus on your footwork and positioning. Be ready to move at all times. Take small and quick steps to adjust your position and reach the ball. Stand near the centre of the table. This lets you cover a wider range and respond to shots more effectively. After each shot, return to your ready position quickly. This makes sure you are always prepared for the next shot.

Lack of spin control-

In Table Tennis, the most common mistake is struggling with spin control. Spin is a powerful aspect of the game, and not being able to control it effectively can lead to errors in receiving and returning the ball. Whether it be a topspin, backspin, or sidespin, mastering spin control is essential for tactical advantages. To avoid this mistake, practice different spin techniques. Keep your table tennis racket angle steady when you hit the ball. Include different types of spins in your practice sessions. Practice maintaining the same angle to gain better control. Always remember, that practice and patience are key to mastering spin control.

Being very aggressive while playing-

While playing Table Tennis players can get too aggressive. It is like trying to hit the ball super hard all the time. Being too aggressive can lead to making mistakes, such as hitting the ball out of bounds or into the net. To avoid this mistake, think before you hit the ball. Work on hitting the ball hard when it makes sense. Don’t always use the same super-strong shots, mix up some slower and more controlled shots. Practice how to defend well, aim well, and stay calm.

Poor ball placement-

Another common error made by players while playing is not able to place the ball in the right place. Many players focus on hitting the table tennis ball but forget about where it goes. Bad ball placement can make it easier for your opponent to return the ball. To avoid this, during your practice work on accuracy. Focus on hitting the ball where you intend to. Experiment with different angles. Don’t always hit the same spot, mix it up. Make use of the forehand and backhand sides, corners, and middle of the table.

Not watching the opponent’s action-

The most neglected and underrated mistake players always make is not paying enough attention to what your opponent is doing on the other side of the table. When you are too focused on your own shots, you might miss crucial signs from your opponent, like the direction of their shots, the spin they are applying, or their overall playing technique. This can lead you to a disadvantage in the game. To avoid this mistake, make a habit of observing your opponent. This can give you a brief idea of how your opponent is playing and what techniques you should apply. Play with different opponents having different playing styles. This will give you a competitive edge and help you to respond more effectively to your opponent’s moves.

Lack of concentration-

Lack of concentration while playing the game can turn out to be a game-changer for your opponent. Losing focus can lead to missed shots, slow response, and overall poor performance during match time. It is important to stay more attentive throughout the game. To work on this error, start doing a mental warmup before the match starts. Focus on the current shot, don’t think about past mistakes. Practice breathing techniques to improve concentration. Improved mental presence on the table tennis court will help you to react fast. Always remember staying in the game mentally is as important as your physical skills.

Ignoring fitness-

Many players underestimate the importance of physical fitness. Lack of fitness can lead to tiredness, slow movements, and decreased performance in the game. Better fitness will help you play better and prevent injuries. To avoid this, engage in cardio exercises like running, cycling, or swimming. Develop your muscle strength. Do stretches to make your body flexible. Being flexible makes you move quickly and reach far shots. Eat a balanced diet and make sure you sleep well to give your body time to recover

In our blog, we touched upon some common mistakes Table Tennis players often make and also discussed how to work on them. Now it is upon you to recognize your mistakes and work on them because whether you are just starting your journey in table tennis or you have been playing the game for a long time, understanding and fixing these mistakes is essential for improvement.

5 Winter Swimming Myths That Chill Freeze Your Aquatic Learning in Winter

Winter significantly affects swimming in various ways. With winter approaching, some parents hesitate to send their kids to swim in the cold water. Some people drop their plans to take swimming coaching because of the winter. Winter can present challenges for swimmers but it is important to remember that swimming in winter is not a bad idea at all. In this blog, we will clear up doubts/myths people have about winter swimming.

Learning to swim is a summer activity

One of the common myths about winter swimming is that swimming is exclusively a summer activity and it is not safe to learn or enjoy it during cooler months. But that’s not true! Swimming in cooler months can be great for your health. Swimming in cooler months can boost your immune system, increase blood circulation, and make you feel fresh and energetic throughout the day. Swimming can be fun and beneficial all year round.

Pools are too cold to swim in winter

Another common myth about winter swimming is that pool water will be too cold to swim in cooler months. It is true that cool temperatures make the pool water cold but there are many coaching centers or swimming pool facilities that offer heated swimming pools.

If you are also worried about the temperature drop of the water and hesitating to take swimming coaching then The Acres Club has something to offer you, a Heated Swimming Pool. Heated pools provide comfortable and enjoyable swimming by adjusting the temperature automatically. So don’t worry about the pool being too cold, heated pools make winter swimming a cozy and enjoyable experience.

Swimming in winter causes cold

There is a belief that swimming in cooler temperatures causes you to catch a cold, but this is far from the truth. Swimming in cooler temperatures, when done safely, doesn’t directly lead to falling sick. Swimming in cooler temperatures can boost your immune system and improve your resistance to illnesses. Colds are typically caused by viruses and not by exposure to cold water. So don’t let this myth keep you away from learning or enjoying swimming all year round.

Swimming in winter causes muscle cramps –

It is a misbelief that cold water causes muscle cramps, it’s not true. Cold water alone doesn’t directly cause muscle cramps; it can occur in any water temperature. It is mainly led by overexertion or inadequate stretching before swimming. Whether it be cool temperature or warm temperature, it is crucial to warm up properly when you swim. So don’t let this myth scare you away from swimming in cooler months, it is safe as long as you take the right precautions and practise good swimming habits.

Swimming in winter makes your skin dry –

Well, this is true that cold water or winter weather can be harsh on the skin, but that is not the whole truth. Dry skin is a result of not properly rinsing off after swimming to cleanse your body of pool chemicals like chlorine and not moisturising it enough. Thus, it doesn’t occur only in winter, it can happen anytime all year round when proper post-swimming skincare is not followed. So don’t let this thought discourage you from continuing your aquatic learnings during cooler months. Proper hydration and moisturising can help maintain healthy skin during cooler months as well as after swimming in cool temperatures.

Swimming Safety – Tips For Safe And Enjoyable Swim

Swimming safety is super important for all swimmers, no matter whether you are a beginner or a pro. Why? Accidents can happen to anyone, so learning how to swim safely can prevent that. When a beginner just starts swimming, he/she may not be familiar with the challenges they can face in the water. Learning how to swim safely helps beginners build confidence and reduce the risk of accidents. When professional swimmers participate in open water swimming, they swim in tricky locations like oceans, giant lakes, and big rivers. Water can be tricky at such places with currents and depths, so swimming safety measures become crucial in such cases.

Swimming is fun and healthy, but if we are not careful we can get hurt. Plus it is smart to know what to do when someone is in trouble in the water. So swimming safety is our superhero cape; it ensures enjoyment, fitness, and most importantly life safety in the water.

In this blog, we will be sharing some safety tips to enhance your swimming experience.

  • Choose the right swimming location

It is very important to choose the right location for swimming. Prefer locations with lifeguards on duty whenever possible. Lifeguards are trained to respond quickly in case of emergencies. Lifeguards keep a watchful eye on swimmers and are equipped with rescue equipment. If you are swimming in open water be cautious of areas of strong currents, tides, or other hazardous conditions. Swimming in such places without lifeguards can be extremely risky. Keep in mind that water conditions can change with the weather and seasons so stay informed about the local weather conditions of the chosen swimming location before heading to the beach or pool.

  • Pre-swimming preparation

Before jumping into the water there are a few things you should do. First, make sure you have the right swimwear and goggles that fit you well. Then do some gentle exercises like stretches to warm up your muscles and prevent cramps. Always check the water conditions and be aware of any rules at the swimming spot. Make sure you can swim in that area and check the location of the lifeguards. Don’t eat a heavy meal right before swimming. Keep yourself hydrated, and drink plenty of water. Avoid consumption of alcohol. These simple steps will help you have a safe and fun time in the water.

  • Use water safety equipment

Using water safety equipment is important for swimmers of all levels, no matter if you are just starting to swim or you are really good at it. Knowing how to use water safety tools is a fundamental aspect of ensuring your and others’ safety. Learn about all water safety equipments in your swimming sessions from your swimming coach, and make sure you use those equipments every time you swim. They help to keep you safe if something unexpected happens.

  • Follow rules and etiquette

Rules are for good reason, they help prevent accidents and chaos. Make sure you are aware of all the rules at the swimming spot before jumping into the water. Don’t purposefully splash others. Share swimming space. By following rules and practising good swimming etiquette, we not only protect ourselves but also contribute towards a more enjoyable swimming experience for all.

  • Learn CPR techniques and first-aid skills

Accidents can happen anytime and anywhere, in or around water. Knowledge of basic first aid and CPR can be a lifesaver. First aid skills can help you take immediate care of minor injuries like cuts. Having CPR knowledge can be a lifesaver if someone experiences drowning or sudden cardiac arrest in or around water. These skills give you the power to take immediate action in emergencies, for yourself or others.

  • Children’s Safety

When we talk about swimming safety, children take centre stage. Children are naturally curious about swimming but they may not be aware of potential dangers. Always monitor children when they are in or around water. Educate your child about water safety irrespective of whether they know swimming or not. For the safety of your swimmer child, teach them the importance of listening to lifeguards and following pool rules. If your child is not a strong swimmer, ensure to enrol him/her in swimming classes and give them proper swimming training before getting into the water.

  • Learn essential swimming skills from professional coaches

Learning swimming lessons from professional coaches can be adventurous for you. Apart from giving you the best training, they can teach you vital water safety knowledge such as recognizing hazards, and understanding currents. At The Acres Club, our experienced and professional instructors ensure that you not only learn to swim but also understand essential safety measures in and around water.

  • Identify common swimming hazards

Common swimming hazards can occur even in the most inviting pools or pleasant beaches. Some common hazards include hidden underwater rocks, underwater obstacles, slippery areas by the pool, and strong water currents. Keep an eye on sudden weather changes. Weather change can make swimming risky.

  • Skin Care

Skin care is often underestimated in swimming. The chlorine in the swimming pool water, sunlight, and saltwater in open water swimming can be tough on your skin. So applying sunscreen on your body before going to swim is like wearing a safety shield to protect your skin from the harsh UV rays. After swimming, rinse off to remove pool chemicals or salt from your skin. It is important to moisturise your skin after swimming to keep it hydrated.

Know your limits

Last but not least, it is important to understand your limits. Knowing your limits means you should be aware of how comfortable and skilled you are as a swimmer and not pushing yourself beyond that point. Knowing your limits can prevent exhaustion, panic, and potential accidents and make swimming more fun and safe.

Following these tips can make your swimming experience joyful and safe.

To conclude, swimming is a joyful and refreshing activity that can bring fitness to our life. However, it comes with its share of risks. Safety while swimming is a very important aspect of swimming and we should not underestimate it. Learning the right skills, knowing the rules, spotting the hazards, and knowing your limits can make you safe in the water. So when you jump in the water, be smart and make your every swim memorable!

Badminton & Beyond: From Evolution to Popularity In India

Badminton, a popular racquet sport, has a rich history that dates back to ancient civilizations in India, China, and Greece. During ancient times, various forms of this game were played for leisure and exercise. It is said that the modern form of Badminton was invented in British India by British military officers around 1850. A fun fact about Badminton is that earlier it was called ‘Poona’ because it was very popular in the garrison town of Poona. After the retirement of British army officers, this sport was brought back to England. It became so popular there that the Duke of Beaufort introduced it in the ‘Badminton House’, his country estate, and since then the game has gotten its name ‘Badminton’.

The first-ever badminton competition, the “All England Open Badminton Championships,” was started in 1899 by the ‘Badminton Association of England’. By the year 1934, the ‘Badminton World Federation’ was established. In India, the ‘Badminton Association of India’ was established in the same year. In 1992, the game paved its way into the Olympics and became an official Olympic sport.

Badminton is very popular all over the world because it is very easy to play, you just need two racquets, a shuttlecock, and an opponent to play with. Badminton is played by two or four members, either as singles or doubles. Racquets are used by players to hit the shuttlecock over a net. Here the objective is to score points by making the shuttlecock land on the opponent’s side of the court and preventing them from returning it successfully. The game continues until one side scores the required number of points to win the match.

Importance of a good coach to excel in Badminton

Good coaching plays a vital role in excelling in any game. Apart from speed, agility, and coordination badminton requires strategy, so a skilled coach plays a very important and irreplaceable role here. A skilled coach can provide personalized guidance on techniques, footwork, strokes, and strategies keeping in mind the player’s strengths and weaknesses.

A coach can teach players tactical knowledge about shots, positions, and strategies. A good coach designs training programs to improve the physical fitness, strength, endurance, and flexibility of players. Coaches provide immediate feedback on performance. Coaches have a deep understanding of the sport’s technical parts. They can identify flaws in players, recognize their strengths, and provide training according to that. A coach is essential for maintaining enthusiasm and keeping players motivated.

In short, a skilled and knowledgeable coach serves as a mentor, strategist, motivator, and technical guide. With the right badminton coaching, players can be aware of their full potential and achieve excellence in the sport.

5 reasons why Badminton is one of the most popular sports in India

  3. Affordable and easy to play: Badminton requires minimum equipment – two racquets and a shuttlecock and can be played almost anywhere. People from different backgrounds can enjoy it without spending a lot of money.
  4. Badminton is an Olympic game: Badminton is in the Olympics, which makes it more attractive. Indian badminton players’ global success has increased public interest and support for the sport.
  5. Launch of different leagues and tournaments: The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has played a very important role in increasing the popularity of Badminton in India. BAI has organised national and international-level tournaments. Leagues like the Premier Badminton League (PBI) have made the game even more popular. The ball must clear the net and land within the designated boundaries on the opponent’s side. Each player serves a ball diagonally. The game continues with alternating the serves until one player scores 11 points or more and has a lead of at least 2 points to win a game. The player or team that wins the pre-decided number of games is declared as a winner.

How is Squash played?

Squash is a fast-paced indoor racquet sport. It is played by two or more people on a court with four walls. The objective is to hit a small rubber ball against the front wall, aiming to make it bounce twice or reach the out-of-boundary area before the opponent can return it. The game begins with tossing a coin. The player who wins the toss decides to serve or receive. Players serve from the service box and the game proceeds with rallies, with the central T being a crucial position. The scoring is based on games to 11 points, with two-point margins for victory. Players change sides on the court after every point. Squash has three types of interactions, Let, No Let, and Stroke.

How to improve your Squash game- 5 tips for beginners :

Observing the opponent

Observing your opponent can be a game-changing factor. Do this during warm-up. Notice their movement, position, and the way of their backswing. This will give you a quick idea about how they are likely to attempt their shot and you will be prepared for your play.

Learn to control the T

Learn to control the ‘T’ and ultimately you will learn to control the match. Hit shots to the different corners of the Squash court and keep your opponent away from your strategic position.

Watch Squash matches frequently

Watching Squash matches can be highly beneficial for beginners as it will provide valuable insights. It will help to improve your skills and understanding of the game. Observing professional players will help you to learn the proper techniques and footwork.

Exercise

As we have discussed earlier, Squash demands flexibility of the body and mental agility. Include cardio exercises like running, swimming, and squat jumps in your daily routine. Work on building your endurance. Include leg exercises to strengthen your legs. Remember that a fit body is as important as a good technique in Squash!
